Benefits
Second Ring is simple: they call your UK landline number at the cheaper rate — you decide whether you answer in the app (recommended) or divert to mobile (no app).
- App = best value (recommended). Answer on Wi-Fi or 4G/5G and keep everything in one place.
- Don’t trust your signal? Divert instead. Switch to “no app” call forwarding so it rings like a normal call.
- Switch anytime. Use the app at home and divert — you’re never stuck with one option.
- Go live in minutes. Pick a landline number, share it, and they can add it to their approved list.
How it works
It’s simple: we give you a landline number, they dial it from the prison phone, and you answer in the app (recommended) or divert to mobile.
You get a UK landline number
Choose a local area code and we assign you a dedicated Second Ring number for prison calls.
They dial your landline from prison
From their side it’s just a normal landline call at the lower landline rate instead of mobile rates.
You answer (app or divert)
Answer in the Second Ring app (Wi-Fi or mobile data) or divert to your mobile (no app). You can switch anytime.
Many families send money into prison to top up call credit. By giving them a landline number instead of a mobile, that credit lasts longer and you get more time to talk.
Why Second Ring is cheaper
Prison phones usually charge different prices for landlines and mobiles. Your Second Ring number is a landline, so they pay less each time they call you.
Your Second Ring number fits here – a normal 01/02 UK landline.
What they’d pay if they called your mobile directly from prison.

How calls from prison usually work
Most prisons follow a similar process:
- Numbers are approved. The prisoner fills in a form listing family, friends, solicitor, etc. Staff check and authorise the list. Only approved numbers can be called.
- A personal PIN is issued. They must enter their PIN before every call.
- Calls are taken from call credit. Family and friends can pay money in; each call reduces their balance.
Your Second Ring number simply becomes another approved “home” landline number on that list — but it can ring in the app (recommended) or divert to your mobile.
Setting up Second Ring for prison calls
Getting started only takes a few minutes:
- Choose your UK landline number. Pick a local area code that suits you or your family.
- Choose your Second Ring plan (from £2.50/month). This gives you your landline number plus the app option.
- Complete checkout and create your account. You’ll receive an activation email with your details.
- Download the Second Ring app (recommended). Install it on your mobile (and optionally tablet or laptop).
- Activate the app. Open the app and follow the steps (for example, scanning the QR code in your email).
- Share your Second Ring landline number. Give it to the person in prison so they can add it to their approved list.
- Prefer no app? You can divert calls to your mobile and still keep the same landline number.
